Amaranth, also known as pigweed or tassel flower, is the common name for plants in the Amaranthus genus, typically grown as annuals and recognised by their small green or reddish flowers arranged in dense clusters. While some species are considered weeds, amaranths are valued around the world as leafy vegetables, grains and ornamental plants.
‘Love-lies-bleeding’ has been grown since the Victorian era primarily for its ornamental beauty. Its long, cascading ropes of deep crimson flowers add a striking elegance to borders and garden arrangements.
If you allow the plants to mature in autumn, the seed heads also provide a valuable source of food for birds. Amaranth seeds contain nutrients that are often lacking in a typical seed diet, making them especially beneficial for garden wildlife.
