The Calathea concinna 'Freddie', often called the 'Freddie' or 'Zebra Plant', is a popular houseplant known for its stunning foliage.

  • Appearance: This plant features glossy, light green leaves with striking, dark green, feather-like markings. The elongated, lance-shaped leaves are typically ruffled at the edges.
  • Origin: Native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, it thrives in warm, humid environments.
  • Unique Feature: Like other Calathea or Prayer Plants, its leaves exhibit nyctinasty, a movement where they fold up at night and reopen in the morning.
  • Size: This plant typically reaches 30-60cm in height.
  • Pet-Friendly: Calathea 'Freddie' is non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, discourage them from consuming large amounts, as it may cause mild digestive upset.
  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2 inches (5cm) of soil feel dry. Water less frequently in winter.
  • Humidity: High humidity is crucial. Consider placing it in a bathroom or kitchen, misting daily, using a pebble tray with water, or using a humidifier.
  • Temperature: Maintain a consistently warm environment, ideally between 16-24°C (61-75°F).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally a blend of soil-based compost and perlite. You can also find specialized Calathea & Maranta soil mixes.
  • Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the growing season (April to September) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing in winter.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound, into a slightly larger pot.
  • Water Quality: Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater, as Calatheas are sensitive to chlorine and fluoride in tap water.
  • Maintenance: Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, and prune any yellowing or damaged leaves.

Potential issues
  • Yellowing leaves: Can be caused by over or underwatering, pests, nutrient deficiencies, or changes in the environment.
  • Brown leaf edges/tips: Often a sign of low humidity, dry air, overfertilizing, or using tap water.
  • Curling leaves: Indicates either insufficient watering or humidity, or excessive light or temperature.
  • Faded leaf patterns: Suggests too much light or a lack of fertilization.

By providing the right care and attention to its specific needs, your Calathea 'Freddie' will flourish and add a touch of tropical beauty to your indoor space.
