Ceropegia woodii, commonly known as "String of Hearts," "Rosary Vine," or "Chain of Hearts," is a delicate and popular trailing succulent houseplant known for its heart-shaped leaves and long, cascading vines. It's native to South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. The plant's Latin name honors botanist John Medley Wood, who discovered it in the late 19th century. It's a firm favourite here at Shell on Earth!

  • Appearance: Delicate, firm, heart-shaped leaves with silver-grey-green patterns on top and a green to purple underside. Leaves grow on long, trailing stems that can reach up to 2 meters in length.
  • Flowers: In the summer months, it may bear pretty, small pink, tubular flowers.
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade. A sunny windowsill (south or west-facing) is ideal, but be mindful of direct sunlight, especially during peak summer, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. This succulent is drought-tolerant and can quickly become waterlogged, leading to root rot. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Soil: Thrives in a well-drained, sandy or cactus soil mix.
  • Fertiliser: Feed monthly during spring and summer (growing season) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half-strength. Do not fertilise during winter.
  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C (64-79°F) and should be protected from drafts.
  • Humidity: Tolerates average household humidity levels, but occasional misting can provide a boost.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings or by planting the small tubers that form along the stem. Cuttings can be rooted in water or soil.
  • Pests and Diseases: Generally pest- and disease-free, but watch out for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale.
  • Toxicity: Considered non-toxic to pets, but it's always best to keep plants out of their reach to prevent accidental ingestion, which could cause mild gastrointestinal upset.

      Plants by post!

I bought a Ceropegia woodii, along with Pilea Peperomioides, narcissi minnow bulbs and cork mats.

It was delivered promptly, in good condition, and the plants apart from looking a little thirsty, survived the journey. I haven’t planted the bulbs yet but hope to have a good display in spring. The cork mats are perfect for preventing water marks on window sills - could just do with a bigger size now!

      Thank you
