Crassula ovata 'Minor', also known as Dwarf Jade, Miniature Jade Plant, or Miniature Money Plant, is a compact succulent, a smaller version of the popular Crassula ovata. It is native to South Africa and Mozambique. It is a popular houseplant due to its ease of care, manageable size, and distinct plump leaves.

  • Leaves: Small, glossy green, thick leaves, often edged with red. They grow densely along the stems, giving it a bushy appearance. The Dwarf Jade's leaves grow much closer together compared to the standard Crassula ovata.
  • Growth habit: Bushy, compact, and tree-like.
  • Size: Can reach up to 1.5 meters over time, but is more commonly seen at around 30cm in 5 years. It is considered a small plant, reaching a height of about 1-2 feet at maturity. Its mature size at 5 years is typically 15-30cm.
  • Flowers: Can produce small clusters of light pink or white, star-shaped flowers in autumn or spring. Flowering is more likely in warmer climates.
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight but can tolerate partial shade. A few hours of direct sunlight daily are beneficial, but avoid scorching in midday summer sun. Rotating the plant regularly can help prevent it from leaning towards the light in shadier spots.
  • Watering: Water sparingly and thoroughly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting the plant sit in water. Reduce watering frequency in winter when the plant is dormant. In frosty conditions, cease watering entirely.
  • Soil: Requires well-drained, loamy soil with a neutral pH. A standard cactus potting mix or a mixture of John Innes No. 2, perlite, and coconut coir is recommended.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser two or three times during the growing season (April to September). Feed monthly through spring and summer, using a diluted fertiliser. Do not feed in winter.
  • Repotting: Repot every two or three years in spring.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated by stem or leaf cuttings.
  • Stem Cuttings: Take a section of stem with at least two nodes and some leaves. Remove lower leaves and allow the cut end to callous over for a few days. Place the cutting in water until roots develop, then pot in well-draining succulent compost, or plant directly into compost and water well.
  • Leaf Cuttings: Gently twist off healthy leaves and let them callous over for a few days. Place the calloused end slightly into a well-draining succulent mix, or lay the leaf over the soil. Keep the soil moist but not soggy and place in a bright, warm environment. Roots should form in a few weeks, followed by new shoots.
  • Humidity: Does not require additional humidity.
  • Temperature: Optimum temperature is 15-24°C, but it can tolerate temperatures down to 10°C. Frost tender, so bring indoors before cold weather arrives.
  • Pests and Diseases: Generally disease-free, but may be susceptible to aphids, mealybugs, and vine weevils.
  • Toxicity: Can be toxic if ingested by pets or children.
