Crassula swaziensis 'Variegata', also known as the Variegated Money Maker Plant, is a beautiful and relatively easy-to-care-for succulent, known for its attractive variegated leaves and bushy growth habit.

  • Prefers bright, indirect light: Place your plant near a window that receives filtered light.
  • Can tolerate some direct sunlight: Especially beneficial in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Avoid intense, prolonged direct sunlight: Can cause leaf scorch and fade the variegation.
  • Insufficient light can lead to: Spindly growth, brittle tissue, faded color, and reduced resistance.
  • Excessive sun in summer can: Burn leaves and stems, causing slower growth.

  • Water sparingly: Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings.
  • Overwatering is a common issue: It can lead to root rot.
  • Reduce watering in winter: The plant enters dormancy during the colder months.
  • Use room-temperature water: Cold water can shock the plant.
  • Check soil moisture: During the growing season, water when the top inch of soil is dry (typically every 7-10 days).
  • Winter watering: Reduce to every 2-3 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely.

  • Use a well-draining succulent or cacti potting mix: Ensure good drainage.
  • Enhance drainage: Mix in sand or perlite to a regular potting soil.

  • Ideal temperature: 15-26°C.
  • Avoid temperatures below 12°C: Especially in winter.
  • Low humidity is preferred: Native to arid climates.
  • Avoid misting: Only occasional hosing down to clean leaves, ensuring they dry completely.

  • Feed once a month: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser during the spring and summer growing season.
  • No need to feed in winter: The plant is dormant.

  • Repot every 2-3 years: In the spring, using a slightly larger pot.
  • If too large for repotting: Remove some topsoil and replace with fresh compost.

  • Propagate by softwood stem or leaf cuttings: In spring or summer.
  • Stem cuttings: Take healthy stems, remove bottom leaves, allow to callus, then insert into well-draining soil.
  • Leaf cuttings: Gently twist a whole leaf off a healthy plant, allow to callus, lay flat on slightly moist soil.
  • Keep cuttings in bright, indirect light and moist soil until rooted: Roots will typically form in 2-6 weeks.

  • Red leaves (aside from natural variegation): Sunburn. Move to a location with less direct sun.
  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or lack of nutrients. Increase light and reduce watering.
  • Mushy leaves or root rot: Overwatering is the most likely culprit. Reduce watering immediately and inspect roots. If necessary, remove rotten roots and repot in fresh, well-draining soil.
  • Stretching (spindly growth): Insufficient light.
  • Pests: Mealybugs, spider mites, aphids, vine weevils, root mealybugs. Inspect regularly and treat as needed.
