Echeveria agavoides, also known as the molded wax agave, is a beautiful succulent popular for its striking rosette shape and relatively easy care.

  • Leaves: The leaves are triangular, fleshy, evergreen, and typically pale green with red margins. Cultivars like 'Lipstick' have more pronounced red colouring, making them appear "almost hand-painted". Another variety, 'Ebony', features dark margins that are almost black.
  • Shape: It forms compact rosettes of leaves and can reach a size of 0.2m in height and 0.5m in spread.
  • Flowers: In spring and early summer, it produces tall stems with red, lantern-shaped flowers tipped with yellow.
  • Growth rate: Echeveria agavoides is a slow-growing succulent.

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light and appreciates a few hours of direct sunlight daily, which enhances the leaf colors.
  • Watering: Water moderately in the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant. Water directly into the soil to avoid getting the rosette wet.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, ideally a cactus potting mix or a blend of standard potting soil, perlite or sand, and coconut coir.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 15°C and 23°C (60-75°F) but can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures.
  • Hardiness: If temperatures are below 10°C, it's best to move the plant indoors during the winter.
  • Feeding: Echeveria agavoides doesn't require a lot of fertiliser but can benefit from a small dose of weak cacti feed in spring and summer.
  • Dormancy: This succulent typically goes dormant in the winter months when temperatures fall, and watering should be reduced during this time.

  • Offsets: Echeveria agavoides produces small plantlets, called offsets or "chicks", which can be removed and replanted.
  • Leaf cuttings: New plants can also be propagated from leaf cuttings in spring or summer. Allow the cut end of the leaf to callus over before planting in well-draining soil.

  • Overwatering: Can lead to root rot. If leaves turn yellow or drop, it might indicate overwatering.
  • Underwatering: Leaves may wilt or shrivel.
  • Insufficient Light: Can cause weak, spindly growth (legginess).
  • Pests: May be susceptible to mealybugs, vine weevil, and aphids.
