Echeveria 'Blue Prince' is a beautiful succulent highly prized for its vibrant blue-green foliage and relatively easy care. This hybrid variety displays a striking rosette form with thick, fleshy leaves that can develop a bronze tinge or purple blush in full sun exposure and as they mature. The rosettes can reach a diameter of up to 30 centimeters.

  • Striking foliage: Tight rosettes of blue-green leaves, sometimes with a bronze or purple tint.
  • Contrasting blooms: Produces tall stems of deep red, or yellow flowers, depending on the season, typically in late spring or summer.
  • Clump-forming habit: Slowly offsets, creating new plantlets at the base.
  • Size: Can form medium-sized rosettes, making it a good choice for container gardens or succulent arrangements.
  • Light: Needs abundant bright, direct sunlight to maintain vibrant colours and compact form. While it can tolerate full sun, it's best to offer some afternoon shade in hot climates to prevent sunburn.
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant. Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid getting water directly on the leaves or leaving the plant sitting in water.
  • Soil: Requires a fast-draining soil mix, like a cactus potting mix combined with perlite or coarse sand.
  • Temperature: Thrives in mild to warm temperatures. Needs protection from frost and cold temperatures below 5°C (41°F).
  • Feeding: Benefits from feeding during the active growing season (April to September). Use a diluted liquid seaweed feed every two weeks.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated from offsets or leaf cuttings in spring or summer.
  • Offsets (Chicks): Gently remove offsets that form at the base of the mother plant. Allow the cut surface to callus over for a few days before planting in a well-draining soil mix.
  • Leaf Cuttings: Select a healthy, mature leaf from the base of the rosette. Gently twist or cut the leaf from the stem, ensuring the leaf base remains intact. Allow the wound to callus over for a few days before laying it on top of slightly moist, well-draining soil. Roots and new plantlets will develop from the leaf base.
  • Avoid overwatering: This is the most crucial aspect of Echeveria care. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other fungal diseases.
  • Provide adequate light: Insufficient light can lead to a leggy plant with faded color.
  • Ensure good drainage: Use a well-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
  • Protect from frost: Move the plant indoors or provide frost protection in areas with cold winters.
  • Handle with care: The waxy coating on the leaves can be easily damaged, so handle the plant gently.
