Kalanchoe beharensis, commonly known as Elephant's Ear Kalanchoe, Felt Bush, or Velvet Leaf, is a striking succulent plant prized for its unique foliage and relatively easy care requirements.
- Leaves: Large, thick, fleshy, and typically triangular in shape with crimped or undulating edges.
- Fuzzy Texture: Covered in dense, felt-like hairs, giving them a soft, velvety feel.
- Colour: Leaves are usually a pale silvery-green, though mature leaves can develop a rusty brown colour, particularly in the cultivar 'Rusty 2'.
- Growth Habit: A bushy, succulent, tree-like shrub, it develops a thick, woody stem and branches as it matures.
- Size: Can grow quite large, reaching 0.5–1 meters (1.5-3 feet) in height in cultivation, and even larger in ideal outdoor conditions.
- Flowers: Produces small, urn-shaped, greenish-yellow flowers on tall stems in late winter or early spring.
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
- Temperature: Tolerates warm temperatures but is not frost-hardy and needs protection from freezing temperatures.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining soil mix, like a cactus or succulent potting mix with added perlite or grit.
- Watering: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering during the dormant winter months.
- Feeding: Can be fed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted 2-3 times during the growing season.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by seed, stem cuttings, or leaf cuttings, with leaf propagation being particularly effective as new plantlets may form on the surface of the leaves.
- Origin: Native to Madagascar.
- Awards: The cultivar 'Fang' (a cross with Kalanchoe tomentosa) and the species itself have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
- Toxicity: Kalanchoe beharensis is toxic to humans and animals when ingested. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.
- Pests and Diseases: Generally disease-free, but may be susceptible to mealybugs, vine weevil, scale, and spider mites.
- Defense Mechanism: Employs a stress-limited defense system to deter herbivores, characterized by tissues with high density and defense structures (like hairs) on the surface that contain amorphous silica.
