Maranta leuconeura 'Mint' also goes by the name Baby Prayer Plant.

  • Leaves: Pale, pastel mint green with elegant, dark green veining. The underside of the leaves is a contrasting rustic, burnt crimson or maroon color.
  • Prayer Plant: The leaves fold up at night, resembling hands in prayer, and reopen again in the morning. This movement is known as nyctinasty.
  • Size: Can reach an ultimate height of around 30cm, or 6-12 inches tall and wide.
  • Growth Habit: This plant has a sprawling growth habit and can work well in hanging baskets or on shelves.

  • Light: Needs bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: Keep the soil evenly moist during the spring and summer months, but allow the top 2-3 cm of soil to dry out before watering again. Reduce watering during the winter. It is sensitive to chemicals in tap water, such as fluoride, so using filtered, distilled or rainwater is recommended. Brown leaf tips can be caused by low humidity or the minerals in tap water.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity levels, ideally between 60-80%. Misting daily, using a humidity tray with pebbles and water, or placing the plant in a naturally humid room like a bathroom or kitchen can help maintain humidity.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Avoid temperatures below 15°C (60°F), as this can cause stunted growth, flower loss, and yellow leaves.
  • Soil: Prefers a slightly acidic soil that is well-draining yet retains some moisture. A blend of coconut coir, fine pumice, perlite, and activated charcoal is recommended. Alternatively, a mix of 1 part shredded bark, 1 part vermiculite, 2 parts perlite and 4 parts sphagnum moss or 60% houseplant potting mix and 40% perlite can be used. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Fertiliser: Fertilise during the growing season (spring and summer) every few weeks with a diluted, balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilising in autumn and winter.
  • Repotting: Repot in the spring every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with drainage holes and a fresh, well-draining soil mix.
  • Pruning: Prune back any yellow or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth and maintain a bushy shape.
  • Pests & Diseases: Be on the lookout for root rot from overwatering. Leaf spot, powdery mildew, spider mites, aphids, and scale insects can also affect the plant. Maintaining proper humidity and good air circulation can help prevent infestations.
  • Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets and children.
