Grow box for a contemporary designed garden.

A modern view? This Modern Grow Box is curated with plants to offer a fresh take on planting.

About The Modern Grow Box

In contrast to the traditional English Cottage garden, which often features free-roaming plants and organic curves in pathways and borders, modern gardens tend to be characterised by clean lines, order, and a dynamic yet relaxing atmosphere. In a modern garden, plants are often chosen to complement the surrounding architecture, and the use of water features adds movement and interest to the space.

The kit includes 6 seed packets, with peat-free soil discs and plant labels.

  • Cosmos 'Sensation' for bright tall blooms
  • Echinacea 'Magnus' for block perennial planting
  • Nasturtium 'Tom Thumb Alaska' for trailing blooms
  • Oregano 'Greek' for fresh scents and structure
  • Shiso 'Red Leaf' for deep base foliage and intrigue
  • Verbena Bonariensis to bring ornamental shapes and colour

In The Records
John Brookes MBE is widely regarded as the "man who made the modern garden". He coined the term "room outside", capturing his vision of a garden as a usable living space rather than merely a collection of individual plants. His drawings employed a "grid system" based on proportions found in a house or main rooms, which unified and helped gardens to flow. He favored planting based on form and mass, rather than individual flowers. Brookes advocated for low-maintenance gardens that harmoniously combined lifestyle, architecture, and garden. He revolutionised garden design by introducing the notion that all income levels could have designed, fashionable, peaceful gardens tailored to their preferences. He was the first independent designer to present a Chelsea Flower Show exhibition garden in 1962, where he presented the idea of a "Room Outside".
