Sow seeds around 20cm apart in rows spaced 45–60cm apart.Position:
Prefers a sunny, open position, but will tolerate light shade.Soil:
Grow in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter.Support:
As plants grow taller, provide support with canes or string to prevent stems from flopping, especially in exposed areas.Care:
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly when flowers and pods are forming.Harvesting
Harvest from May to July (or earlier for autumn-sown crops). Pick pods when they are well filled but still tender. Regular picking encourages continued production.
Top tip
Pinch out the growing tips once the first pods start to form - this helps direct energy into pod production and can reduce blackfly.
