A vibrant and productive leafy crop, ‘Fireworks’ chard lives up to its name with brightly coloured stems in shades of red, pink, yellow and orange. Selected by River Cottage, it’s as ornamental as it is practical - bringing both colour and harvests to the garden.

Fast-growing and highly reliable, chard produces tender, glossy leaves that can be harvested over a long period. The young leaves are perfect for salads, while mature leaves and stems are ideal for cooking, offering a mild, earthy flavour.

Easy to grow and incredibly versatile, ‘Fireworks’ performs well in beds, raised beds and containers, making it a great choice for both kitchen gardens and smaller spaces.

  • Sowing:
Sow directly outdoors from March to July in shallow drills around 2cm deep. Alternatively, start in modules and transplant once established.

    Germination:
Typically takes 7–14 days. Keep soil consistently moist.

    Spacing:
Thin or plant out to around 25–30cm apart.

    Position:
Prefers a sunny or partially shaded position.

    Soil:
Thrives in fertile, moisture-retentive soil, enriched with organic matter.

    Care:
Water regularly and harvest leaves frequently to encourage continuous growth.

    Harvesting

Begin harvesting from late spring onwards. Pick young leaves for salads or allow leaves to mature for cooking. Regular picking will promote fresh growth throughout the season.

    Top tip

Harvest outer leaves first and allow the centre to keep producing - one sowing can provide months of crops.
