  • Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors or in a seedbed from February to April. Sow thinly in drills or trays and cover lightly with compost.

    Germination:
Typically takes 10–14 days. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.

    Transplanting:
When seedlings reach around 15–20cm tall, transplant into their final position. Make holes using a dibber around 15cm deep, space plants 10–15cm apart in rows spaced 30cm apart, and gently drop seedlings in — no need to firm in, just water.

    Position:
    Prefers a sunny, open position.

    Soil:
Grow in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

    Care:
Water regularly and keep weed-free. Earthing up stems as they grow can help produce longer white shanks.

    Harvesting

Harvest from autumn through winter, lifting as required once stems are well developed. ‘Giant Winter’ stands well in the ground, allowing for a long harvesting period.

    Top tip

For longer, whiter stems, plant deeply and earth up gradually as the plants grow.
