Sow indoors from April to May in individual pots, around 2–3cm deep. Alternatively, sow outdoors from late May to June once the soil has warmed and risk of frost has passed.
Germination:
Typically takes 7–10 days in warm conditions.Planting out:
Transplant once plants are well established. Plant in blocks rather than rows, spacing around 30–45cm apart - this improves pollination.Position:
Prefers a warm, sunny and sheltered position.Soil:
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter.Care:
Water regularly, especially during dry spells and when cobs are forming.Harvesting
Harvest from August to September, when the silks turn brown and the kernels release a milky juice when pressed. For the sweetest flavour, eat as soon as possible after picking.
Top tip
Always plant in blocks - wind pollination is key to forming full, well-developed cobs.
