Senecio rowleyanus, commonly known as the "String of Pearls" or "String of Beads", is a charming and unique succulent plant, popular for its trailing stems adorned with spherical, pearl-like leaves. Originating from the dry regions of southwestern Africa, it naturally grows in rocky terrains, avoiding harsh direct sun by seeking the shade of other plants and rocks.

This tender, evergreen succulent features long, slender stems that can reach two to three feet in length, making it ideal for hanging baskets or elevated shelves where its stems can gracefully trail. The mid-green leaves are fleshy and spherical, resembling beads or pearls. It can produce delicate, paintbrush-shaped, white/cream, fragrant flowers in the summer.

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. Some morning or late afternoon sun can be beneficial.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Bottom-watering is a recommended technique to prevent the foliage from sitting in excess water.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix, or a blend of regular potting soil with perlite or coarse sand, is ideal.
  • Temperature and humidity: Prefers warm room temperatures (21-24°C) during summer and slightly cooler temperatures (13-16°C) in winter to encourage blooming. It dislikes high humidity and needs good airflow, so avoid misting and crowded conditions.
  • Feeding: Fertilise sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser.
  • Pruning: Trim leggy or excess vines to maintain shape and encourage fuller growth.
  • Pests and diseases: Generally resistant to pests, but inspect regularly for common succulent pests like mealybugs or spider mites. Root rot can be a problem if overwatered.

Senecio rowleyanus is considered mildly toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Ingestion may cause minor illnesses such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy. Contact with the plant's sap may also cause skin irritation or rash. It is important to keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.
