Syngonium podophyllum 'Neon' is also known as 'Neon Robusta' or 'Pink Arrowhead Plant'. This eye-catching cultivar of Syngonium is prized for its bright, often pink-tinted leaves that add a vibrant splash of colour to any indoor plant collection. It's a relatively easy-to-care-for plant, making it a good choice for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.
- Leaves: The 'Neon' variety features distinctive arrowhead or goosefoot-shaped leaves, a defining feature of the Syngonium genus. These leaves are known for their vibrant "neon" pink or rosy colour, with a lighter green underside. As the plant matures, the leaves may develop lobes.
- Growth Habit: Syngoniums are naturally vining plants but can be pruned to maintain a bushier, more compact shape. They can be grown as houseplants, outdoor vines in suitable climates, or even in terrariums. Mature plants can grow up to 1.5-2 meters tall indoors.
- Toxicity: All parts of the Syngonium plant are toxic if ingested, and the sap can be an irritant. Keep them away from children and pets, and wear gloves when handling them.
- Air Purification: Syngoniums are also known for their air-purifying qualities.
- Light: 'Neon' thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch or fade the leaves, while low light may diminish the vibrancy of the pink colouration. A north or east-facing window is often ideal.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings. Water regularly during spring and summer, reducing frequency in winter. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in stagnant water.
- Humidity: Syngoniums appreciate high humidity levels, reflecting their rainforest origins. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly, placing the pot on a tray of moist pebbles, or using a humidifier.
- Temperature: Maintain average to warm room temperatures, ideally between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Avoid exposing the plant to cold drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, high-quality potting mix that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. A soil with added perlite or orchid bark for drainage is often recommended. Some sources suggest a slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
- Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser, diluted to half strength, monthly during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising in the winter.
- Pruning: Prune as needed to maintain shape and size, and to encourage bushier growth. Pruning is best done in spring or early summer. You can also propagate new plants from the cuttings.
- Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the previous one.
- Propagation: Syngoniums can be easily propagated from stem cuttings in water or soil, or by dividing a mature plant at the rootstock.
This plant is supplied in a 6cm pot and the plant is approximately 15cm tall, including the pot.
